  5. Listed below are solutions to known problems which may occur
  6. installing or running the application.
  7.

  12. PROBLEM: The installation displays a warning that the
  13. application may not run correctly using the current display
  14. settings.
  15.  
  16. SOLUTION: This application requires that your display settings
  17. are set to at least 800 x 600 and with more than 256 colors. To
  18. change these settings on your machine proceed as follows:
  19.  
  20. From the Start button, choose "Settings" and "Control Panel".
  21. This will bring up a list of controls, from which you should
  22. choose the "Display" option. This brings up the Display
  23. Properties panel. Click on the "Settings" tab to show the
  24. current settings for the numbers of colours, desktop size and
  25. font size. Ensure the "Color Palette" setting is set to a value
  26. greater than 256 (eg. "65536 colors", "High Color", "16 bit" or
  27. "True Color"). Use the "Desktop Area" slider to ensure that it
  28. is set to at least "800 by 600 pixels". You can use the "Test"
  29. button to check your selection. Click on "Close" when you have
  30. finished.

  36. PROBLEM: The installation displays a message indicating
  37. "administrator privileges" are required.
  38.  
  39. SOLUTION: The installer has to make changes to the system which,
  40. when running under Windows NT, can only be made by a user with
  41. administrator privileges. The installer must be run again when a
  42. user with administrator privileges is logged-on. Once installed
  43. the application can be used by any user.

  49. PROBLEM: When the application is run it displays a warning that
  50. a system update is required.
  51.  
  52. SOLUTION: This application requires a recent version of a
  53. Microsoft system file called "Comctl32.dll" to be installed. The
  54. installer checks for this file and should prompt the user to
  55. install the "COMCTL32.DLL" update. However if for any reason the
  56. user skipped this part of the installation or it did not
  57. complete correctly then it can be installed manually.
  58.  
  59. The update can be installed either by installing a recent
  60. version of Microsoft Internet Explorer (4.01 SP2 or later) or by
  61. running the Microsoft update program "401comupd.exe" which is
  62. supplied with this application.
  63.  
  64. To run the update program:
  65.  
  66. * Ensure the application CDROM is in the drive.
  67.  
  68. * Close the application if it is already running.
  69.  
  70. * From the "Start" button menu, select "Run..." and type
  71. "D:\setup\401cmupd.exe" and press RETURN (assuming D is your
  72. CD-ROM drive). Follow the on-screen instructions to install the
  73. update.

  75. Below are the notes supplied by Microsoft for running this
  76. update:
  77.  
  78. You can use the file 401comupd.exe to install Comctl32.dll
  79. (version 4.72.3611.1900) on Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows
  80. NT 4.0. You cannot use 401comupd.exe for Windows 3.x, Windows
  81. for Workgroups 3.x, Windows NT 3.x, Windows 98 SE, or Windows
  82. 2000. Do not attempt to run 401comupd.exe on any system with
  83. Internet Explorer 5.x installed. You must install Service Pack 3
  84. or later on Windows NT 4.0 before installing 401comupd.exe. As
  85. with all operating system changes, administrator privileges are
  86. required to use 401comupd.exe on Windows NT 4.0.

  88. (note that the file 401comupd.exe has been renamed to
  89. 401cmupd.exe on the CD because of filename restrictions)

  99. PROBLEM: I'm running Windows NT 4 and the installation fails
  100. with a message indicating that I need to install "Service Pack
  101. 3".
  102.  
  103. SOLUTION: This application uses a Microsoft utility called the
  104. Windows Media Player. The Windows Media Player will only run on
  105. Windows NT 4 if Service Pack 3 or later has been installed.
  106.  
  107. Please contact Microsoft to obtain the latest Service Pack. This
  108. can usually be downloaded free of change from their web site.
  109. Some computer magazines also supply it on their cover-mounted
  110. CDs.

  116. PROBLEM: An error occurs during the part of the installation
  117. process which says it is installing the "Windows Media Player"
  118.  
  119. SOLUTION: The Windows Media Player is a Microsoft component that
  120. this application uses to display video sequences. The Windows
  121. Media Player Installer is run as part of the main installation.
  122. If you have problems with the Windows Media Player you can try
  123. installing it manually.
  124.  
  125. To manually install the Windows Media Player: From the "Start"
  126. button menu, select "Run..." and type "D:\setup\mpfull.exe" and
  127. press RETURN (assuming D is your CD-ROM drive). Follow the
  128. on-screen instructions to install the Windows Media Player.

  130. If the Windows Media Player installation fails please contact
  131. Microsoft for support. At the time of writing the latest version
  132. of the Windows Media Player is available for download at
  133. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/.

  139. PROBLEM: When the application is run it displays a message
  140. indicating that the Windows Media Player must be installed.
  141.  
  142. SOLUTION: The Windows Media Player is a Microsoft component that
  143. this application uses to display video sequences. The Windows
  144. Media Player Installer is normally run as part of the main
  145. installation. It may be that you skipped the installation of the
  146. Windoes Media Player or it didn't install correctly.
  147.  
  148. To make sure the Windows Media Player is installed correctly you
  149. can uninstall the application and then re-install it (see (8))
  150. or you can install it manually (see (5)).

  156. PROBLEM: When the application is run it displays a message
  157. indicating it cannot find a file called "appsetup.txt".
  158.  
  159. SOLUTION: This indicates that for some reason the application
  160. data files (which normally reside on the supplied CD) cannot be
  161. accessed. This could occur if the CD is not in the drive or if
  162. the drive letter of the CD drive has changed since the
  163. application was last run.
  164.  
  165. Click on "OK" to dismiss this message and a window is displayed
  166. which will allow the location of the file to be selected.
  167. Navigate to the folder containing "appsetup.txt" and click OK.
  168. Note that the "appsetup.txt" file is normally within a folder
  169. called "shared".

  175. PROBLEM: I can't re-install the application.
  176.  
  177. SOLUTION: When the CD is inserted in the drive and autorun or
  178. when setup.exe is run, a check is made to see if the application
  179. is already installed. If it is, the currently installed version
  180. is run otherwise the installation process is started.
  181.  
  182. If you want to re-install the application then you should
  183. uninstall it first. To uninstall, select the uninstall option
  184. from the Start menu or use "Add/Remove Programs" from within
  185. "Control Panel".
  186.  
  187. If for any reason you want to force the application to
  188. re-install even if it hasn't been uninstalled then you can run
  189. D:\setup\setup.exe (assuming D is your CD-ROM drive) which skips
  190. the check for a currently installed version.
